Join and Grow
With spring here, it’s a great time to highlight one of our most colourful resident-run clubs in the building – The Green Thumb Club. Led by residents Rosemarie MacDonald and Sandy Gordon with help from a team of other residents, these club members keep things sprouting around Kingsbridge.
To join the club you don’t need to be an avid gardener, you just need to have an appreciation of plants and flowers and enthusiasm. In fact, Rosemarie who has an abundance of plant knowledge, says, it wasn’t always so. She jokingly points out, “All our club members have our horticultural degree from the University of YouTube.” Pretty impressive, since this group grows most of their plants and flowers from seeds.
Although this is a busy time of the year for them, they only slow down slightly during the off-seasons. You’ll find them in the Potting Room all year, lovingly tending to their creations and enjoying each other’s company. As you walk around Kingsbridge you’ll spy their beautiful blooming greenery throughout the building and in the two raised flower gardens in the courtyard. And, new this year are two recently installed planters on the second-floor patio that they’ll be growing vegetables in. The hope is to share these with local food banks and to even use some in our own kitchen.
2022 is the Year of the Garden, which is an opportunity to express our Canadian pride with red flowers and to celebrate the health and environmental benefits that gardening brings. We’re excited to see what the Green Thumb Club has in store this year!
